Holiday period, no holiday period—we must do Sunday Surf Poem.
Today, I wanted to introduce you to a poem about a surfing shark. Well, actually, it’s a poem about a little cowgirl. My husband wrote a series of these for me that involved the horses I rode, and some more dramatic adventures, such as The Sad Little Cowgirl and Her Banjo and The Little Cowgirl and Her Frozen Cat. I’m into children’s literature, you see.I give you The Little Cowgirl and the Surfing Shark, from 2015.
by Campbell Jeffrey Wilson
The little cowgirl was bored one day
And wanted to try something new
“I want to go to Hawaiʻi,” she said
“And see an ocean so blue”
The only ocean I get to see
Is the pond at the end of the road
But every time I go in there
I get chased by an ugly, fat toad
Maybe I can learn to surf
And make some friends in the sea
I’d like to meet a starfish
Or perhaps an anemone
So off she went to Waikiki
Dreams of surfing in her head
She was so excited whilst she slept
She nearly peed the bed
She learned to surf that very day
But then got a surprise
It wasn’t a starfish that she could see
From the corner of her eye
It was a little shark that looked at her
With eyes of shiny green
His teeth were as sharp as needles
But he did seem very clean
If you live your life in the ocean
You never need a bath
This made the cowgirl happy
And she had a little laugh
The shark climbed up onto her board
And she tried to push it away
It gave her a smile and bared its teeth
And she decided to let it stay
They surfed together all day long
And forgot about their cares
“No one will believe I’m friends with a shark!
No one, anywhere!”
And as the sun was setting
At the very end of the day
The little shark jumped off the board
And started swimming away
The cowgirl said, “Can we do it again?
It sure was a lot of fun”
But the shark just kept on swimming
And she knew that they were done
Back at the ranch she’ll stare at the pond
From morning until dark
And she’ll wish to see her friend again
The little surfing shark
