Sunday Surf Poem: First Wave by Zoe Bonik

Would you believe it—not many surfer poets out there?! But we did find this poem by Zoe Bonik about her first wave. After a little bit of social media snooping, we can confirm that Zoe Bonik is in fact a surfer—and a pretty good one. This poem is believed to have been written when she was much younger and just starting out around 2015.

First Wave

By Zoe Bonik

Blue,
as far as the eye can see
Seagulls crowing at each other
as they battle for fish

A surfboard under my arm
The sticky wax rubs off onto my hands
Butterflies fill my stomach

Waves crash in front of me
and the salty spray hits my face

I paddle and catch one
At first it was a little shaky
like a little kid taking their first steps

It felt like I had just conquered the world
I had just caught my first wave
