There’s no ‘AI’ in surfing, but there’s always an ‘In’

Everywhere you look, there’s another newsletter or blog churned out by AI—optimized for search and about as exciting as Malibu on a flat day.

At The Wipeout Weekly, we believe there’s no “AI” in surfing—but there is an “in”—as in insider knowledge. Our stories come from real conversations, shaped by real surfers, inspired by actual questions asked, discoveries made, and recommendations shared in our global surf community.

You may not think you need to know what an Olo is or whether surfing actually originated in Peru—but guess what? We’re covering it anyway. Because that’s basic surf culture education, and you need it.

šŸ¤– What we do use AI for at The Wipeout Weekly:

Emoji suggestions: “Never met a surfer he didn’t like, but prefers snacking on smoked anchovies” šŸ„ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤šŸ˜ŠāŒšŸ‘Ž, šŸ™…ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ•šŸ”āœ…šŸŸšŸ’ØšŸŸ

Fact-checking: “Is Cloud9 a beginner-friendly break?” Nope!

Synonyms: kook, grom, grommet, first-timer, greenhorn, noob

Creative visual concepts: Like a GIF of a Zamboni polishing the ocean

Zamboni polishing the ocean

Needs-must stuff: meta descriptions, keyword suggestions, big data analysis, spell checks

Emotional support: “Do you think I made a right decision packing in my paid job and starting The Wipeout Weekly?”

And here’s the kicker—our creators aren’t just surfers. They’re scriptwriters, improvisers, and actors too. So you know you’re getting stories that inform and entertain. They’ll make you laugh (we certainly hope)—or, at the very least, make you think.

We don’t let AI near our ideation or content creation. Even AI agrees—it shouldn’t. Because AI can’t paddle out. It can’t wipe out. It can’t feel the absolute humiliation of a nose dive in front of 20 people at First Point.

But we can.

Surfing is as AI-resistant as it gets.
